klineberg

A graduate of Haverford College near Philadelphia, Professor Stephen L. Klineberg received an M.A. in Psychopathology from the University of Paris and a Ph.D. in Social Psychology from Harvard. After teaching at Princeton, he joined Rice University’s Sociology Department in 1972.In March 1982, he initiated the annual Houston Area Survey, a systematic series of telephone interviews with representative samples of Harris County residents. Supported by a consortium of local foundations, corporations, and individuals, the surveys have been expanded in recent years to include much larger numbers of Anglos, African-Americans, Hispanics, and Asians. The recipient of nine major teaching awards at Rice, Professor Klineberg has written numerous journal articles and publishes a continually updated series of reports on the survey findings. The newest report, entitled “Public Perceptions in Remarkable Times,” will be released in the fall of 2005. He is also at work on a book that will cover the first quarter century of the Houston Area Survey, exploring through systematic survey research the way the general public is responding to the economic, demographic, and environmental challenges of our time.
